Bootleg Gunpla Daban Model MG 1/100 DABAN 6658 MVF-X08 Eclipse Gundam Review
The much-anticipated first new product of the year from the Daban Model manufacturer has finally arrived: the Daban 6658 set, featuring the Eclipse Gundam model with a Maneuver Striker Pack. For those who have been eagerly asking about the new product, you can finally take a breather. Let’s dive into the details of this product's parts and features.
Notable Issues
Surface Finish and Minor Defects
- Oil Sheen on Parts: The familiar issue of an oily sheen on the parts persists.
- Minor Plastic Shrinkage: There are small areas with plastic shrinkage, but these are not significant enough to form noticeable indentations and mostly do not affect visible surfaces once assembled.
Sticker Issue
One of the biggest disappointments is the lack of water decals, with only adhesive stickers provided, which include designs for both the main unit and the Maneuver Striker Pack.
Integration of Parts
The original version included an I plate, most of which was redundant. The manufacturer has now integrated the useful parts from the I plate into the J plate, eliminating the need for an I plate in this kit, which differs from the original version.
The integration of the Maneuver Striker Pack from the original version adds value, especially since the original product was reasonably priced. This bundling approach aims to enhance the product’s appeal and cost-effectiveness. However, consumer reception to this bundled offering remains to be seen.
Improved Assembly Fit
- Ease of Assembly: The assembly process has improved, with fewer instances requiring excessive force or necessitating hole expansions. The parts fit together smoothly, indicative of mid-to-high standards for the manufacturer.
- Material Flexibility: The parts are slightly softer than previous models, reducing tight fit issues but sometimes leading to slightly loose joints that might require post-assembly reinforcement.
Structural Integrity
Being a direct copy of the original model, the structure and transformation mechanisms are faithfully reproduced. The transformation process works well as long as the instructions are followed, avoiding breakage due to overly tight joints.
Inclusion of Maneuver Striker Pack
The set includes the Maneuver Striker Pack, originally a limited edition worth approximately USD 35. This bundle offers both the main unit and the backpack, unlike the original which required separate purchases for additional backpacks. Market acceptance of this bundled configuration is yet to be determined.
Summary
The overall quality of the product meets the manufacturer’s standard levels, with no significant improvements or declines. While familiar issues like minor plastic shrinkage and oil sheen persist, the integrated package offers additional value compared to the original setup. However, with the original Bandai product already being affordably priced, the timing of this new product's release could be seen as awkward. How the market will respond remains uncertain.
The Daban 6658 set maintains the manufacturer’s typical quality, with a smoother assembly process and added value through integration. Despite some persistent minor issues, the product is appealing. The market's reception will ultimately determine its success.
