P-Bandai Gunpla HGCE 1/144 GAT-02L2 Dark Dagger L Review

Following the previous release of the HGCE Dagger L, the GAT-02L2 Dark Dagger L has also been made into a kit. Priced at 1,650 yen, it includes accessories such as the M703k Beam Carbine, a shield, the Mk39 low-recoil cannon, and two saber blades. Notably, there are no stickers included. Extra parts from the HGBF Build Strike joint runner are also included but are not needed for this kit. This kit features a stealth-focused black and dark gray color scheme, with accents in a dark wine red that add a sinister touch.

Kit Details and Construction

The Dark Dagger L is based on the previously released Dagger L, with the primary difference being the color variation. Key joints utilize the HGBF Build Strike structure, which is also seen in the HGCE Strike. Unlike the Dagger L, this kit replaces poly parts with plastic for the neck, showing a slight evolution. The kit does not use ABS plastic, instead opting for a combination of polycaps and KPS, with polycaps labeled PC-002.

Color and Detailing

The model's coloring is simple yet effectively reproduced through molded colors, eliminating the need for stickers. Only minor paint work, such as blackening duct interiors, is required. The visor is made of clear parts molded in a vibrant clear yellow, reacting well under blacklight to stand out against the dark body colors.

Design and Articulation

The overall structure and design of the Dark Dagger L remain consistent with the Dagger L. The chest features a simplified Strike design with saber grips on the waist. The back supports a Striker Pack joint, with separate parts for the rectangular thrusters. The shoulder armor integrates seam lines into the detailing, and the forearms have minimal visible seams. The hips feature a swing gimmick, and the front and side armor are movable without internal reinforcement.

Weaponry

The Dark Dagger L comes with several weapons, including a newly added Mk39 low-recoil cannon. The black and dark gray color scheme avoids a flat look by offering slight color variations. The M703k Beam Carbine, although reused from the Dagger L, has a sensor molded in dark gray, with a separate part for the muzzle. The shield, matching the dark color scheme of the body, attaches via joints and allows for positional adjustments.

The ES04B Beam Sabers are gripped at the waist and come with standard-length blades. The highlight is the new Mk39 low-recoil cannon, a long and slim bazooka with a matching design to the main body. The cannon features a simple structure with movable sensors and provides an impressive visual impact due to its length and design.

Playability and Customization

The joints offer smooth articulation without hindrance, and the inclusion of various Striker Packs allows for extensive customization options. The bright visor contrasts well with the dark colors, and the joint structures support dynamic poses and stability. A comparison with other kits like the HGCE Strike and HG Zaku Warrior (Lunamaria unit) shows a slightly larger size consistent with HGCE standards.

The HGCE Dark Dagger L kit builds on the HGCE Dagger L base with a new color scheme and additional Mk39 low-recoil cannon, providing a menacing look and increased play value. The dark colors combined with fluorescent parts and excellent articulation make this a standout and well-crafted kit.
