P-Bandai Gunpla MG 1/100 MSM-07 Z'Gok [ Gundam Unicorn ver. ] Review
The MG Z'Gok, inspired by its appearance in "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn," has been released in a special color scheme. Originally launched in 2013 as a Premium Bandai exclusive, this review focuses on the newly re-released version, priced at 3,300 yen. The packaging is simple, and while the instruction manual is a rehash from the standard MG Z'Gok, an additional paper with a color recipe is included.
Accessories and Details
The kit includes a clear mono-eye in colorless plastic and a standing pilot figure. For markings, there are foil seals for the white lines on the arms and cockpit hatch, along with Gundam decals for further detailing.
Unique Features of This Release
Unlike the typical MG Z'Gok, this version comes in a larger box. This is due to the inclusion of three runners with two copies each for color variation, resulting in many extra parts around the armor. This Z'Gok, designed for the Zeon remnants attacking the Torrington base in "Gundam Unicorn," is a color variant of the previously released MG Z'Gok. Although the proportions and mechanics remain unchanged, multiple runners allow for a drastically different color scheme primarily achieved through molded colors.
Color Scheme
The color palette features a military-inspired green and brown, with the flexible bellows rim on the arms and legs in brown. The iron nails are now dark blue, adding a striking contrast. True to MG standards, the chest duct fins and frame are detailed with separate parts, and the joints utilize both polycaps and ABS for enhanced durability.
Design and Articulation
The body color is primarily molded, though the white lines on the arms and cockpit hatch are represented by stickers. The mono-eye and guard are made from clear parts. The torso is well-crafted with no transparency issues, and rubber covers are used for the abdomen, hip joints, and ankles, reflecting its amphibious MS design.
Mono-Eye Functionality
The mono-eye can rotate by removing its cover, and for the first time, there's an option for a clear red mono-eye due to the two runners included. This is a welcome change as stickers tend to highlight imperfections.
Chest and Accessories
The chest fins are independently movable, and the cockpit hatch can open and close. The 240mm rocket launcher on the head is also a separate piece.
Backpack and Pilot Figure
The backpack features an intricately detailed screw section, and the pilot figure remains unchanged, posed standing.
Comparison with Previous Versions
The flexible bellows rim differs slightly from the standard Z'Gok, with the Unicorn version featuring a simpler internal frame. The iron nails maintain their opening and rotating functions, with armor seams detailed effectively.
Joint Construction
The hips use ball joints (BJ) with rubber covers, providing stability. The legs feature a subdued dark green and brown scheme, with well-executed details despite their simplicity.
Overall Impression
In comparison to the MG Char's Z'Gok, this version is simpler without the four-clawed details. However, the improved color separation around the mono-eye is a positive addition.
Weight and Stability
While the 2003 base kit lacks stand joints, the model is heavy enough for stable standing thanks to its large feet. This simplicity makes it enjoyable to assemble and display.
Potential for Customization
Some armor parts can be easily removed to reveal the internal frame, allowing for creative color variations. Though the overall scheme remains green and brown, various tweaks can lead to interesting results.
Summary
This MG Z'Gok (Unicorn Color Version) is built on the base of the mass production type from 2003, presenting a straightforward yet appealing color variant. The new green and brown scheme offers a fresh, military-like aesthetic. The surplus parts for customization and detail enhancement are a significant feature, allowing for playful assembly while retaining a stable price point.
