P-Bandai Gunpla Action Figure Chogokin MSN-04FF Sazabi Review
The Sazabi model is based on the design from the Gundam statue in Fukuoka and features the Double Horn Funnel, a new weapon introduced in scenes with RX-93ff ν Gundam. This addition is detachable, allowing the Sazabi to be displayed in its classic form if preferred.
Head and Facial Details
The figure’s head sculpt stays true to the original Sazabi design with no major alterations. The detailing is sharp, and the overall proportions are well-executed. The mono-eye feature, while slightly oversized due to the LED light-up function, is adjustable; however, using a dial under the chin to move the eye sideways proved somewhat challenging. A simpler cover design would have been more practical.
When the switch on the back is activated, the mono-eye and main camera both light up. The main camera glows brighter, creating a slight imbalance with the mono-eye’s larger size.
Body and Finish
The body shape and detailing maintain the Sazabi’s iconic design, with excellent balance and proportions. Unlike many Chogokin figures that rely heavily on molded plastic, this model incorporates some metallic paint, enhancing its visual appeal. However, some parts retain a basic plastic finish, which somewhat reduces the overall premium feel.
Arms, Legs, and Articulation
While the shoulders can appear somewhat extended and detached, the bulky, muscular build of the arms and legs is typical of Sazabi’s design, adding to its strong visual impact. The inner forearms feature retractable compartments that store beam sabers; however, these are purely for storage, as the actual saber blades are separate accessories.
Backpack and Funnel System
The backpack contains adjustable funnel containers that can move in all directions. The propellant tanks are ball-jointed but offer limited movement. The funnels are removable individually, though the process can be a bit tricky, and the container does not open for easy access.
The light-up function’s battery compartment and switch are concealed behind a removable backpack cover for a seamless appearance.
Articulation and Movement
The figure’s articulation is decent, though somewhat limited in the neck and waist areas, likely to support the weight of the Double Horn Funnel. The shoulders lift to a horizontal position, while the elbows and knees bend deeply. Although the hip joints have a wide range, forward movement is slightly hindered by the front armor plates. Side-to-side movement is unrestricted, and the figure has good ground stability.
Accessories and Options
- Effect Parts: The set includes a range of impressive effect pieces, the largest spanning roughly 35 cm end-to-end.
- Base and Support Stands: Includes a primary base, auxiliary stands, and various joints.
- Beam Shot Rifle and Shield: The rifle, though molded in basic plastic, has detailed markings. The shield, while well-sculpted, shows the plastic texture in places. On the reverse side, a Beam Tomahawk is attached, and repositioning allows for an extended beam blade.
Double Horn Funnel and Effects
Equipping the Double Horn Funnel extends the figure’s height to an imposing 35 cm. The funnel attaches to an empty container on the back and can move in multiple directions thanks to a jointed base. A hand grip and a connector are included, allowing the figure to hold the weapon with its elbow joint for support.
The effects for the Double Horn Funnel are also impressively long, though they’re best displayed with additional support to prevent drooping. The effect parts feature fine detailing but lack paint, giving them a slightly subdued appearance.
The set also includes a unique joint for displaying the Double Horn Funnel effects independently on a stand, though support stands are essential for maintaining stability.
Comparisons with Other Models
Included is an interchangeable right hand for use with the Chogokin RX-93ff ν Gundam, which holds the Sazabi’s cockpit block. Displayed alongside RX-93ff ν Gundam, Metal Build Exia, or ROBOT Spirit RX-78, the Sazabi’s large backpack and bulkier silhouette make it particularly imposing.
Summary
Overall, the Chogokin MSN-04FF Sazabi is a high-quality model with several strong points. Though some plastic textures could be improved, the addition of metallic paint, refined detailing, and solid proportions make it one of the more satisfying releases in the Chogokin Gundam lineup. The articulation is slightly finicky, but the key movement areas, like shoulder and ground stability, work well. The intricate Double Horn Funnel and effect pieces add significant play value, justifying the premium price of ¥46,200 ($320).
With a potential follow-up in the form of the Chogokin Gundam EX, fans hope for a similar level of quality in this ever-growing lineup.
