Bandai Gunpla HG 1/144 MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II Review
The HGUC Psycho Gundam Mk-II has finally been released as an HGUC kit, bringing the menacing presence of this gigantic mobile suit to Gunpla collectors. With a towering height of approximately 270mm despite being a 1/144 scale kit, this behemoth is truly a standout in any collection. Let's dive into an in-depth review of this incredible model kit!
Box & Contents
As expected from such a huge mobile suit, the box itself is quite large. Priced at ¥11,000, this kit comes with an impressive set of accessories:
Weapons & Effects
- Beam Rifle effects (10 pieces)
- Beam Saber effects (12 pieces, including 2 spares)
- Wired Psycho Mu parts for both hands
Additional Parts
- Battle-damaged head (from the ZZ Gundam scene)
- Reflector Bits (10 pieces)
- Action Base 4 & two Weapon Display Bases
Color Accuracy & Stickers
The twin eyes and cannon barrels come with color-correcting stickers.
However, most of the intricate red and yellow lines on the body are fully color-separated in the molded parts, ensuring an accurate look straight out of the box!
Build Quality & Engineering
Being a modern HGUC kit, the Psycho Gundam Mk-II benefits from advanced part separation and intricate panel details.
Key Features
- Fully transformable into Mobile Fortress (MA Mode)
- Uses KPS plastic joints for strong and stable articulation
- No seam lines on major parts due to clever molding techniques
- Inner frame details exposed in the damaged head option
The shoulder joints, neck, and waist sections use a locking mechanism that secures the parts in place during posing and transformation.
Head & Body Details
The head sculpt is highly detailed, with two versions included:
- Standard head
- Battle-damaged head (with exposed inner frame)
The twin-eye sensor uses metallic plastic, meaning you can achieve a realistic look without needing stickers.
The torso and backpack have intricate color separation, and the cannon barrels are individually molded. Even the back thrusters are separately molded parts, adding to the premium feel of the kit.
Articulation & Posability
Despite its massive size, the Psycho Gundam Mk-II has decent articulation:
- Elbows bend deeply, allowing for dramatic arm poses.
- Waist rotation & slight torso swing provide dynamic movement.
- Shoulders can extend outward, improving posability.
- Leg articulation is better than expected, though ground contact is limited.
While not as flexible as a standard Gundam, the sheer size and bulk make up for it.
Weapons & Gimmicks
The Psycho Gundam Mk-II has built-in weaponry, meaning all firepower is stored within its body.
Beam Cannons & Effects
12 beam saber effects included (can be attached to fingers). Beam rifle effect parts can be attached to the hands.
Wired Psycho Mu Weapons
Thick lead wires allow for realistic depictions of remote-controlled beam weapons. Requires a stand for proper display.
Reflector Bits
Comes with two types of parts for different display options. Can be mounted on the included Weapon Display Bases.
Transformation: Mobile Armor Mode (MA Mode)
One of the biggest highlights of this kit is its full transformation into Mobile Fortress mode.
Transformation Steps
- Chest armor lifts up, and the head retracts inside.
- Shoulder armor rotates outward.
- Side skirt armor extends, and thighs retract inward.
- Knee joints bend at extreme angles to complete the transformation.
This transformation is more complex than the original Psycho Gundam, but feels more refined and stable. Unlike the older version, no extra parts are needed for securing the shield placement.
Size Comparison
When placed next to:
- HGUC Zeta Gundam or HGUC Gundam Mk-II, the size difference is staggering.
- Even when compared to Metal Composite Psycho Gundam Mk-II, it holds up well in terms of size and proportions.
- Simply standing next to other HG kits, this Psycho Gundam Mk-II dominates the display with its overwhelming presence.
Summary
Pros:
- Massive size & presence for an HGUC kit
- Excellent color separation (minimal stickers required)
- Complete transformation without extra parts
- Includes multiple effect parts & display stands
Cons:
- Limited ground articulation due to bulk
- Requires stands for wired weapon effects
If you're a fan of big, menacing mobile suits, the HGUC Psycho Gundam Mk-II is a must-have. Whether in MS mode or Mobile Fortress mode, it looks incredibly imposing on display. The high attention to detail, excellent engineering, and well-thought-out transformation make this one of the best HGUC releases in recent years.
