Bandai Gunpla plastic model 1/1 Zakupla-kun DX Set: With Runner Version Reproduction Parts Review
The beloved Zakupla-kun, first released as a single kit at the Gundam NEXT FUTURE event, is now available in a general retail version: the Zakupla-kun DX Set, complete with Runner Version recreation parts. Priced at 1,100 yen, this kit brings back the fun and cuteness of Gunpla with a twist.
Included Accessories
- Zaku Machine Gun
- Zaku Bazooka
- Heat Hawk
- Display Stand
- Complete set of parts for Runner Version recreation
No stickers or extra/unused parts are included.
Adorable Super-Deformed Design
Zakupla-kun, like Gunpla-kun before him, features a super-deformed, chibi-style design with a large head and nearly two-head body proportion. The iconic green color scheme identifies it as a Mass Production Type Zaku.
While the original Gundam NEXT FUTURE version was made using an eco-friendly tea-based plastic, this DX version uses standard plastic with no special additives.
Simple Yet Effective Articulation
The kit retains a simple construction with minimal articulation points. All joints are plastic-on-plastic, without polycaps. Despite the small feet, the figure can stand on its own if balanced correctly. For stability during display, using the included stand is recommended.
Color Separation and Build Quality
Color separation is nicely done, with even the mono-eye being a separate part. The parts count is kept low for easy assembly, and the plastic has a smooth, pleasant finish.
Head Comparison and Mono-Eye Movement
Compared to the tea-plastic version, the DX variant features a deeper green tone and does not have the textured, stone-like feel. The mono-eye remains movable in both versions.
Torso and Limb Details
- The torso has a chunky sculpt with separate parts for the backpack and chest pipes.
- Arms are molded with the shield and shoulder spikes integrated, showing slight seam details under the spikes.
- Shoulders use ball joints, but integrated parts mean limited articulation for the shield.
- Legs are molded in one piece (except soles), offering limited mobility and basic detailing.
Minimal Poseability
Head, shoulders, and hips use ball joints, while the waist can rotate. However, dynamic posing is limited due to the minimal articulation and design constraints.
Comparison with Single Release Version
The DX version shares the same sculpt as the single version. Differences include surface texture, plastic type, and color tone. The tea-plastic version had a distinct scent, which is no longer present.
Equipped with Weapons
Comes with a simple stand similar to Gunpla-kun’s. Weapons include:
- Zaku Machine Gun: One-piece molded; slightly different color from previous versions.
- Zaku Bazooka: One-piece; barrel is filled in due to molding.
- Heat Hawk: One-piece; requires painting for blade details.
Runner Version Transformation
Parts can be disassembled and mounted onto the included runner frame to recreate the iconic "runner" look. The base allows upright display, making it perfect for showcasing in runner form. Runner tags and layout are faithfully reproduced.
Durability and Material Improvement
Unlike LIMEX-based Gunpla-kun and earlier versions, this DX version uses standard plastic, making it sturdier and easier to handle during transformations. It’s also more modification-friendly.
Size Comparisons
- With Gunpla-kun: Matching proportions and style make them look great together.
- With HGUC Zaku: Smaller in size but bulkier due to the head shape.
- With BB Senshi & SDCS: Falls between them in size, with lowest head-to-body ratio and thinner limbs.
Summary
The 1/1 Zakupla-kun DX Set is a fun, affordable collector’s item for Gunpla fans of all ages. While articulation is limited, the charming design, easy assembly, and unique Runner Version display mode add a lot of appeal. The use of standard plastic makes it more durable and mod-friendly than eco-plastic versions. If you enjoyed Gunpla-kun or are a fan of SD-style kits, this set is a delightful addition to your shelf.
