The HG 1/144 Gyan High Mobility Type (GQ), masterfully customized by the Gunpla builder @akasaha1124, stands as an exemplary model of unique modification and intricate detailing.

They created a custom build of the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Gyan, reimagined in the style of Johnny Ridden’s high-mobility machines, also known as the “Crimson Lightning.” The project involved mixing parts and altering the color scheme to give it a high-mobility Gyan-inspired appearance.

To achieve the high-mobility look, they incorporated armor parts from the HG Helmwige Reincar from Iron-Blooded Orphans. Originally, the plan was to mix these parts with the classic First Gundam Gyan, but in the end, using the GQ version worked just as well—perhaps even better, thanks to its more rounded design that suited the concept.

The GQ kit itself is slightly smaller in scale, which creates an appealing sense of imbalance when mixed with parts from other kits. This subtle size difference enhances the bulk and presence of the build, making the mixed sections stand out more clearly.

One issue they noted is that the wrist joint pegs are fragile and prone to breaking. They had seen others report the same problem on X (Twitter). Although the kit can still hold the lance without issue, they considered reinforcing it with brass wire or fixing it permanently with glue.

Additional thrusters were installed to emphasize the high-mobility look, giving it propulsion power that seems comparable to Hakujis’ equipment. The solid, massive form gives off an intimidating “charging into battle” vibe.

The GQ Zeon kits, in their opinion, look incredibly cool. This kit was released on July 5, 2025, and they immediately snap-built it and started mixing parts. Progress slowed a bit during the sanding stage—summer heat and family outings (like taking their two daughters to the pool) left them too exhausted to keep building consistently.

For painting, they worked little by little, about an hour each night on weekdays. Even without air conditioning in the painting room, with temperatures climbing above 30°C, they pushed through to finish the base coating. The results turned out just as cool as they had envisioned.

Paints used:

  • Main body (red): Mr. Color Shine Red (40%) + Azuki Red (60%)
  • Main body (black): Gaia Color Midnight Blue
  • Weapons (black): Mr. Color Blue Black
  • Joints: Mecha Surfacer Heavy
  • Topcoat: Mr. Color Super Smooth Clear (matte)
