The MG 1/100 Blaze ZAKU Phantom: Dearka Elsman Custom, masterfully customized by the Gunpla builder @akasaha1124, stands as an exemplary model of unique modification and intricate detailing.

The Blaze Zaku Phantom from Gundam SEED has been built using the MG kit according to its official specifications. This is the creator’s second MG project, with the first being the recently released Gundam Vidar. When comparing the two, it becomes clear that the base of this kit dates back to around 2019, and the detail density feels noticeably lower. However, compared to HG kits, it still contains plenty of detail and looks impressive even without modifications.

The model featured is the MG Blaze Zaku Phantom, custom unit for Dearka Elsman, shown in the third image and created by Akasaha. The creator has always wanted to work on this SEED Zaku in depth, and modifying it this time provided a valuable opportunity to explore ideas for construction and detailing. While the Vidar kit was already packed with detail and left little room for additional panel work, this Zaku had more open spaces than expected, offering significant potential for customization.

Regarding decals, the included set left a strong impression. The pros are the excellent color quality and striking line decals, especially on the drum magazine and shoulder. The cons are the box and circle markings, which feel slightly awkward, and the caution markings, which appear to be simplified without fully designed text, making them feel less precise. Therefore, both the included decals and personal stock were combined, matching the preferences of the client, who requested a decal-heavy finish.

Without the shield, the silhouette appears sleek and stylish when standing straight, and this configuration is the creator’s personal favorite. The model also looks excellent when fully unarmed, and this version unexpectedly became one of their preferred looks.

During a family trip to Shodoshima by ferry, assembly work was casually done on board. A detailed breakdown of the modifications includes punch holes across the body, panel lining on the thighs, plastic sheet work on areas such as the shins, and enhancements to the sensors on the chest and front skirt. Extra detailing was added to visible empty spaces to bring balance to the overall design.

Paint used

  • Main body (dark gray): Mr. Midnight Blue mixed with small amounts of Neutral Gray II
  • Main body (black): Mr. Color Semi-Gloss Black
  • Main body (white): Gaia Steel White
  • Verniers: Mr. Color Azuki Red
  • Yellow parts: Mr. Character Yellow mixed with a small amount of Steel White
  • Weapons and parts of the frame: Mr. Color Gun Blue Metallic
  • Internal frame: Mr. Color Metallic Black
  • Topcoat: Mr. Color Super Smooth Clear (matte finish)

This work was completed as part of a commission and became the second MG build of the year. It was challenging, especially the painting process, which took roughly ten hours in a single day and caused some physical fatigue. The creator is considering upgrading to a paint booth with better exhaust to eliminate the need for a gas mask. As someone who has always wanted to thoroughly enhance a MG Zaku with detailed work, this project became valuable practice and helped form ideas for future builds. They hope to begin soon but are currently searching for three bazookas that come with Rey’s Zaku. They request that anyone willing to provide them get in touch.
