Gunpla Custom Build : HG 1/144 Destiny Gundam Spec II – CG Accurate by @tough_dog79FP
The HG 1/144 Destiny Gundam Spec II – CG Accurate, masterfully customized by the Gunpla builder @tough_dog79FP, stands as an exemplary model of unique modification and intricate detailing.
This HGCE Destiny Gundam Spec II is a highly refined project based on the standard HGCE kit, rebuilt to replicate the CG model seen in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM as closely as possible. While the original HGCE kit already features solid proportions, the CG version—reportedly influenced by Shigeta’s animation style—presents a noticeably sharper and more balanced silhouette. This build incorporates those CG proportions along with select Metal Build-inspired adjustments to achieve a more dynamic and heroic form.
The base kit required minimal structural correction, but numerous refinements were implemented to match the on-screen CG design. The wings were entirely rebuilt, resulting in the original effect parts becoming incompatible. New effect parts were scratch-built to accommodate the revised structure. By using color-shifting paint, the “Wings of Light” achieve a striking finish that shifts between pink and blue depending on the viewing angle—closely mirroring the cinematic portrayal.
The railguns included with kits such as the Gelgoog and Cavalier are oversized for HG scale. To resolve this, a fully scratch-built version was created at proper scale, likely matching the in-film dimensions. While some details were simplified due to technical constraints, the result integrates naturally with the kit and can also be mounted at the waist.
Both weapons received sharpening work and design corrections. The Arondight’s handle differs significantly from the kit version, so plastic rod extensions were added to recreate the on-screen configuration. The long-range beam cannon also features revised scope detailing for improved accuracy.
The included effect parts were undersized, so older HG effects were repurposed. Since only one was available, a duplicate was cast to complete the pair. Fluorescent paint was applied to ensure they emit a glow under lighting.
The effect tips were sharpened and coated with fluorescent paint. A white gradient was introduced for the first time on effect parts in this build, enhancing depth. Notably, the Palma effect appears luminous even without direct lighting, making it one of the standout elements of the project.
Custom-angled wrists were built specifically to recreate the iconic confrontation pose against the Black Knights. Special paint was applied to the knee joints to simulate the extreme range of motion seen in the film, successfully capturing the dramatic articulation of the CG model.
Though the builder typically focuses on Universal Century kits, this project required extensive revision from modification through finishing. The process was challenging, but with guidance and support from others, the final result faithfully captures the cinematic Destiny Gundam Spec II in 1/144 scale.
As a finishing touch, a bonus display was staged in homage to the Gundam SEED: Rengou vs. ZAFT II Plus unit selection screen—a nostalgic tribute to a long-standing appreciation for the Destiny Gundam, which has grown to rival even Justice in personal preference over the years.
