The HG 1/144 RX-78 Gundam: Amuro Unit [ GQ Version ], masterfully customized by the Gunpla builder @cattleya0120, stands as an exemplary model of unique modification and intricate detailing.

This build reimagines the HG “Red Gundam” into a more familiar RX-78 Gundam silhouette. The main focus of the modification is the head and torso, with selected parts from the Light Cannon used for the limbs to achieve a balanced overall form.

For the standing pose with clenched fists, 3D-printed parts were initially considered. However, their excessive surface detail stood out compared to the weapon-holding hands, so modified fists from HG Arios were used instead to maintain consistency.

The torso is based on Gelgoog parts, and the original mounting holes were repurposed to scratch-build a rear bazooka holder. This allowed functional weapon storage without disrupting the design.

Rather than simply swapping limbs from the Light Cannon, the builder addressed proportional issues in detail. The thighs were replaced to avoid the overly thick and short look, and the knee shapes were reworked to prevent a stubby, forward-protruding appearance. These adjustments were made to better match the slimmer torso and improve visual harmony.

The head was extensively reworked using putty to alter the eye expression. The twin eyes were newly sculpted, and the iconic V-shaped mouth detail was transplanted from a junk 0 Gundam kit.

While the original GQ Gundam design left a strong impression in theaters and remains a personal favorite, the builder notes that it is often divisive among fans. This project aims to bridge that gap by blending the GQ aesthetic with a more traditional RX-78 balance, resulting in a familiar yet refined interpretation.
