The HGUC G-Defenser & Flying Armor is a remarkable collection featuring the G-Defenser and Flying Armor units, available as a set with the Gundam Mk-II before its Revive release. Having recently received an order for resale on Premium Bandai, the set arrived this month, prompting this detailed introduction. The price for this set is set at an affordable 1,980 yen.

In terms of accessories, the package includes only a backpack joint and a stand tailored for the flying armor.

Notable among the contents are foil stickers that enhance the intricate color detailing of the G-Defenser's wings, and authentic decals designed to achieve an RG-style finish. Furthermore, a surplus of Mk-II parts is included.

Let's delve into the specifics of the components within the set.

G-Defenser

The G-Defenser, previously an attachment for the Super Gundam prior to its Revive update, retains its original gimmicks and serves as a conversion kit. Though the core structure remains consistent, minor adjustments have been made to the molding colors to align better with the RG aesthetic. The use of polycaps and ABS for moving parts ensures durability and stability.

Given the release of HGUC's Super Gundam in 2002, certain elements exhibit signs of that era's design, like division lines. While the primary color scheme has been accurately reproduced, the blue wing borders, sections around the nose, select ducts, and rifle white lines are bolstered by stickers. In addition, meticulous painting is required for intricate ducts and vernier interiors throughout various locations.

Detailed features are present around the nose area and side ducts, albeit with some minor seam lines. The missile pod hatch at the binder's tip can be opened and closed seamlessly. While the warheads are non-removable, they are separate components, facilitating independent painting.

The wing's blue border is achieved through stickers that offer swiveling capability. Moving and sliding sections at the tail's end are constructed from durable ABS material. The holding arm of the binder and rear nozzle possess cylinder-shaped details. The white components require manual painting for a complete look. Since the binder is divided into left and right sections, a seam runs through the center.

While parts such as the landing gear are functional, the visible poly cap and cutouts remain a minor downside.

The long rifle's muzzle is a distinct part, although seams persist due to its monaka-like structure. The blue cover is color-coded, with white lines replicated via stickers.

Integration with Super Gundam

When the G-Defenser is attached to the Super Gundam, the deep, sharp blue color scheme exudes a striking presence. Positioned side by side with the RG Gundam Mk-II, compatibility is maintained, further highlighting its versatility.

Despite the absence of a dedicated stand hole, a 3mm pin offers docking capabilities, enabling compatibility with various stands through adapter joints.

Transformation to the G-Flyer involves removing the Mk-II backpack cover and affixing the provided joint. By sliding the left and right engine units to expand the binder and extending the bottom thruster's holding arm, along with opening the core fighter's cover and attaching it to the Mk-II's rear, the G-Flyer configuration is achieved. This process is relatively straightforward and ensures a secure connection.

Given the 1/144 scale, despite relying on a single 3mm pin for connection, the G-Defenser is light and easy to handle. However, compared to the RG, differences in detail density are discernible due to the HGUC foundation of the G-Defenser.

Super Gundam Transformation

The Super Gundam transformation commences with the separation of the core fighter, which unfurls a compact wing. A 3mm-axis stand can be employed to display the core fighter. The subsequent steps involve sliding the left and right units, advancing the white armor plate forward, and extending the binder laterally.

Flying Armor

In contrast to the G-Defenser, the Flying Armor retains its original color scheme from the set with the old HGUC Gundam Mk-II. It offers a straightforward assembly process, reflecting simplicity. Despite its ease of assembly, the Flying Armor imparts a sense of volume through its sizable SFS.

Unlike the G-Defenser, the Flying Armor comes without stickers, relying instead on a straightforward color scheme that aligns with the molding color. The Flying Armor's dimensions are comparable to that of the RG Mk-II, showcasing a cohesive appearance when lined up.

Display

Accompanied by a dedicated display stand with a slide lock mechanism, the Flying Armor's attachment is both secure and aesthetically pleasing. While the stand lacks rotational capabilities, the aircraft's positioning can be adjusted by elevating the nose slightly. The spacious design of the stand prevents instability or detachment, despite the absence of dedicated locking mechanisms for the limbs.

The rifles can be set up without any hindrances, and while height adjustment options would have been appreciated, the stand's stability is commendable.

When combined with the RG, subtle differences in detail may arise, but the less conspicuous joints, along with the sub-flight nature of the Flying Armor, contribute to a cohesive overall impression. The inclusion of decals allows for additional information and detail enhancement, similar to the G-Defenser.

Notably, compatibility extends to the Revive Mk-II and other Gunpla models of moderate size, excluding exceptionally large variants. Due to its versatile design, the Flying Armor effortlessly accommodates 30MM and 30MS models, providing ample room for experimentation.
