P-Bandai Gunpla HGUC 1/144 RX-104FF Penelope [Clear Color] Review

The previously released HGUC Penelope is now available in a clear color variant. Priced at 7,480 yen, this version was initially released at Gundam Base and subsequently made available for order on Premium Bandai. Unlike the first limited package which featured a special color design, the package for this regular version is a single color, reflecting its clear appearance.

The clear color variant offers collectors and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to appreciate the intricate inner workings and details of the Penelope model. This version highlights the mechanical intricacies and design features that might not be as visible in the standard versions. With its transparent components, the clear color HGUC Penelope stands out as an eye-catching and unique addition to any Gunpla collection.

Set Contents

The accessories included with the clear color HGUC Penelope variant comprise a beam rifle, right gun grip, palms, a specialized hip joint for Penelope, exchange duct, FF unit transformation parts, two saber blades, and a display stand. Notably, the display stand has a clear black with glitter appearance. It's important to mention that the depicted struts are extra parts that are not utilized in the assembly.

Regarding the included stickers, they are not notably different from those of the standard version. In addition to the sensors, the set features red decals for the flight unit and gray decals for Odysseus' shoulder duct.

The model's assembly starts with the Odysseus Gundam. This clear color version of Penelope, as featured in Flash Hathaway, is based on a previously released kit. As is typical for recent clear kits, the armor color is transparent while the frame runner is metallic gray. However, the white color, while appearing as milky white, doesn't achieve complete transparency; instead, it features a transparent finish while still retaining the original color scheme.

In terms of parts and structure, there aren't any significant deviations from the standard version. The model retains the same design and features. However, the Odysseus Gundam can be swapped for the Penelope, which can be transformed into its flight form and equipped with the FF (fixed flight) unit.

Despite being a clear color variant, the clear color HGUC Penelope maintains its substantial size and impressive play value, offering a distinctive addition to your Gunpla collection with its transparent and metallic elements.

RX-104 Odysseus Gundam

The crest on the model stands prominently and the eyes have a sharp appearance. The area around the antenna is also made of clear plastic, which tends to be more rigid, so caution is advised when manipulating the antenna to avoid any unintended damage.

The model's torso showcases a substantial rear skirt armor component. Despite its significant size, the structure of the kit is relatively uncomplicated, resulting in many parts lacking panel lines or inner frames. The joints and backpack nozzles have been updated to a metallic gray shade. Notably, the rear armor boasts lining parts, causing it to appear less transparent and leaning towards a slightly darker tone.

An integrated weapon unit is affixed to the arm, providing added versatility. The wrist is designed robustly and includes both a palm and a grip. The Composite Weapon Unit can be deployed by bending the stored mega particle cannon's barrel 180 degrees.

Regarding the waist armor, it features lining exclusively on its rear section. The hip joint is constructed to allow rotation, and the stand joint is a specialized type, making it incompatible with stands equipped with a 3mm axis.

The legs of Odysseus are predominantly white in color. The yellow ducts are accurately color-coded, but due to the nature of the clear kit, they might have a slightly yellowish hue. The soles of the feet feature dowel holes for attaching parts, but there are no corresponding cutouts.

Weaponry and Accessories Options

Regarding the articulation and movement, the range of motion isn't notably different from the normal version. For a more detailed assessment, I recommend referring to the review of the regular version of the kit. The stand included is reminiscent of the type found in older 1/100 scale kits. While the post has been changed to a dedicated design, it's important to note that fine angle adjustments might not be as precise as those possible with two-stage adjustable stands.

The beam rifle features a clear color scheme that corresponds to the main body's transparent appearance. The presence of seams might not be a major concern due to the clear coloration. As before, the gun can be held using the right hand only.

Deploying the mega particle cannon onto the arm is a distinct feature of this model. Given its substantial size and large parts, the dowels on the back of the armor might be noticeable. Additionally, the attachment of a beam saber blade is also an option. The color of the saber blade doesn't appear to have undergone any significant changes and remains consistent with previous versions.

Fixed Flight Unit

The FF (Fixed Flight) unit is a configuration that combines various flight unit parts into one assembly. While it may resemble a massive Mobile Armor (MA), the usage of clear parts remains consistent. When viewed from behind, even the yellow fins are constructed from clear components, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing effect.

This kit is notably larger than the Odysseus Gundam itself, a size that defies the typical expectations for an HG kit. The white sections exhibit a vivid reaction under black light, creating a flashy appearance, while the remaining parts maintain a more subdued appearance.

RX-104FF Penelope

Attaching the substantial flight unit to what would typically be a standard configuration dramatically transforms the model into a formidable and imposing silhouette. The radial expansion of the silhouette retains its powerful impact, showcasing a volume that even exceeds the majority of MG (Master Grade) kits, despite being an HG (High Grade).

Despite the immediate change in silhouette, the individual parts are sizeable, making the replacement process surprisingly straightforward. However, due to its expansive dimensions in all directions, it can be challenging to find appropriate display space. For detailed replacement instructions, I recommend referring to the review of the normal version.

Certain sections around the nose area remain color-coded, while smaller wings are supplemented with stickers. The chest is equipped with a unit that significantly extends forward, effectively elongating the torso.

The tail portion retains its swinging functionality unchanged. This section is also notably long, contributing to its considerable width in both front and rear directions. The shoulder flight unit boasts a unique silhouette reminiscent of a kamishimo kataginu. A large fin-like part is attached to the rear side, adding thickness to the design.

The front armor is also impressively large, featuring funnel missile detailing on the rear, even though removal remains infeasible. The hip joint parts are replaced with wider counterparts. The legs also sport sizable units, which instantly alter the volume around the knees. This design feature showcases a radial expansion.

Clear yellow components are present on the back, making them visually prominent. The ankles are designed with red sole parts. While her hand-held weapon remains the beam rifle, it appears relatively small in this context.

Additionally, alongside the shoulder barrels and composite weapon units, the model allows for the attachment of saber effects onto rifles, providing further customization options.

Comparison with Solid Color version

Similar to the standard version, the legs' weight in this configuration can be quite substantial, potentially causing the hip joints to become looser. It's possible that if left unattended, the legs might droop at certain angles. To address this, some adjustments to the hip joints could help stabilize the model, making it easier to manage overall. The blue component generates a more intense and darker impression. Despite the shared manual, the color recipe remained consistent, resulting in no alterations.

Movability and Articulation

Due to its clear nature, the transparency of the kit can lead to certain areas around the legs appearing quite yellow, especially in the region surrounding the flight unit. As the main body is nestled within the expansive flight unit, the model's complexity increases, potentially affecting the extent of dynamic posing.

The rear section of the kit is particularly striking. The yellow portion on the back of the flight unit appears to emit a radiant light, suggesting the potential to integrate this clear yellow component into a standard version of the aircraft for a captivating effect.

The flight unit can be securely attached due to its robust dowel fixation. Additionally, the effects that accompany the Xi Gundam set can be reused. The shoulder armor can be partially reattached to extend the funnel missile launcher, while the chest armor can be replaced with duct parts based on personal preference.

Transformation into a flight form is possible by covering the nose section and adjusting the positioning of the waist armor and legs. Although leg stability might be a concern at certain angles, the locking mechanism ensures adequate support. Photographs were also taken against a black background, showcasing the clear kit's distinctive transparency and stunning appearance.

Experimenting with different colored lights offers an enjoyable way to engage with the clear color kit, allowing for creative and visually engaging play opportunities.

Summary

Maintaining the same size as the standard version, the model still boasts an impressive silhouette that radiates in all directions. The parts themselves are notably sizable, and due to the relatively uncomplicated assembly with minimal frame structure, the thick and substantial dowel pins on the interior unavoidably stand out. This feature could potentially lend itself to a decorative application.
