Bandai action figure Gunpla GUNDAM UNIVERSE ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Review
The figure shares some parts with the Lupus Rex version, but most of the sculpt is newly designed. Like the Rex, the Barbatos Lupus also features long arms and large side binders, giving it a powerful and dynamic look.
Head Sculpt
The head design is sharp and aggressive, with a large antenna and a pointed chin, consistent with other Barbatos figures. The metallic paint on the eyes is the same as previous versions, although the large antenna makes the eyes somewhat difficult to see.
Body and Waist Design
As with other Barbatos models in the Gundam Universe series, the waist design has been uniquely modified, omitting the internal frame structure typical of the original version.
Arm and Leg Sculpt
Compared to the normal Barbatos, the Lupus has longer arms and bulkier legs, which enhances its unique and somewhat alien appearance. Despite being a budget figure, the shoulder armor is nicely detailed with the Tekkadan logo printed on it.
Back and Side Binders
The back features jointed side binders, which can move for dynamic posing.
Weapons and Accessories
- Sword Mace: The only weapon included with this figure is the large sword mace. Unfortunately, other weapons like the twin maces or the 200mm arm cannon are not part of the package.
- Articulation: The joints are the same as those used in other figures from the Gundam Universe series, providing similar articulation across the board.
Comparison with Other Barbatos Models
When placed alongside the normal Barbatos and Lupus Rex figures, the overall design and feel are similar, though the shade of white differs slightly between each version.
Articulation and Poseability
Due to the lack of a left gripping hand, holding the sword mace with both hands in a traditional pose isn't possible. However, thanks to the long handle, the figure can manage two-handed poses that look close enough to the real thing. One downside noted was that the rear armor tended to pop off easily during posing, which was somewhat frustrating.
The waist can rotate about 20 degrees, offering limited movement. While it's a shame that the iconic twin maces aren't included, the sword mace makes up for it with its size and impact. The wrist joints are also very stiff, allowing the figure to maintain solid poses even with one hand holding the large weapon.
Grounding and Stability
The figure’s ability to maintain stable poses is excellent, thanks to its solid feet and well-balanced design.
Summary
In conclusion, this version of the Barbatos Lupus retains much of the original design while incorporating the distinct look of Lupus, such as its unique red shoulders and Tekkadan emblem. Despite the shared articulation limitations across the Gundam Universe line, the long arms allow for easier two-handed poses compared to standard mobile suits. The stiff wrist joints make the figure fun to pose, and for the price of ¥3,300, it offers plenty of playability.
For fans of Barbatos, this figure is a solid recommendation!
