P-Bandai Gunpla Action Figure ROBOT魂 Spirits <SIDE MS> RX-178 Gundam Mk-II [ AEUG ] ver. ANIME Review
The overall sculpt closely mirrors the earlier Titans version, faithfully reproducing the proportions from the original anime design. The texture is excellent, with solid details throughout the body. However, the white color is notably brighter than both the anime depiction and sample images, which may affect the appearance for those seeking screen-accurate colors.
Head Sculpt
Similar to the Titans model, the head design stays true to the original anime illustrations, with slightly larger eyes, characteristic antenna length, and contours reminiscent of the animation. The metallic paint on the eyes and precise details on the vents and slits add further authenticity.
Body Detailing
The torso showcases a powerful, broad structure, enhancing the Gundam’s robust appearance. The chest area is smoothly contoured, and the navy blue coloring matches the on-screen AEUG color scheme well. Despite this, the white shade on the limbs and torso is a bit brighter than expected, which may slightly impact the visual fidelity for some collectors.
Limbs and Articulation
The arms and legs are sturdily built, with a rugged look especially around the shins and ankles. Unfortunately, the white on these areas is also lighter than in the anime, a minor disappointment. Articulation remains consistent with the Titans version, allowing for dynamic posing and a solid range of motion.
Backpack and Movement
As with the Titans version, the backpack allows movement in the saber rack bases and thrusters, which are mounted on ball joints for flexibility. This adds to the display options and realism in action poses.
Accessories and Effects
The AEUG version introduces several new effect parts, including a bazooka effect and a larger thruster effect, differing from the Titans release. This variation enriches the figure’s display value, allowing for more comprehensive scenes with unique weapon effects.
- Full Armament: The figure can be equipped with all standard weapons found in the Titans version.
- Head Vulcan Pod: This pod attaches directly on top of the head without disassembly, for ease of use.
- Beam Rifle: Equipped with a movable foregrip, scope, and a detachable energy pack that can be mounted on the side armor.
- Shield: Includes both straight and deployed joint options, as well as a detachable spare E-pack at the top. The shield can also be retracted to a shorter form for added versatility.
- Hyper Bazooka: Unlike the all-black Titans version, this one comes in a striking black and white scheme. The grip is movable, and it features a detachable spare cartridge, which can also be mounted at the waist.
Comparison with Older Models
When displayed alongside the older Full Armor Gundam Mk-II, this new AEUG version shows a clear improvement in proportions. While the white color is brighter than some collectors may prefer, it surpasses the Full Armor version in sculpt and articulation. The Titans version remains visually similar, with only the color scheme distinguishing the two.
Posability and Action Shots
The articulation is impressive, with large shoulder joints that allow both hands to hold the bazooka comfortably. The figure includes both straight and curved beam saber effects, enabling it to recreate iconic anime scenes such as the “Valiant Destruction Kick” or the finishing rifle shots. The Gundam can also kneel effectively, suggesting it will pair well with future releases like the Dodai transport unit.
Summary
Overall, the ROBOT Spirits Gundam Mk-II (AEUG Version) ver. A.N.I.M.E. is a well-crafted figure that captures the look and feel of the anime. The proportions, textures, and extensive accessories give it high play value. The one drawback remains the white color, which could have been a shade darker to better match the anime aesthetic. Despite this minor detail, it’s a highly satisfying addition to the collection. An alternate version with a darker white tone would be welcome, perhaps alongside a future Super Gundam release.
