P-Bandai Gunpla MG 1/100 F90IIIY Cluster Gundam Review
As the MG F90 series continues its smooth releases, it's approaching the completion of the entire A-to-Z lineup. The latest addition to this lineup is the MG F90 IIIY Cluster Gundam, now available as a Premium Bandai exclusive. Like the previous models, it comes in a full-color package, and the manual includes some color details, though there’s no specific background on the mobile suit itself. Priced at ¥6,600, this kit includes numerous weapons and parts to recreate the iconic design and features of the Cluster Gundam.
Included Parts and Accessories
The kit includes a beam rifle, two mega beam bazookas, a beam shield, multiple hand types for holding weapons and the shield, a stand joint, mission pack components, a bazooka joint, and two saber blades. Additionally, it includes a set of foil stickers and water decals, which can be used to enhance sensor details, add markings, and supplement blue areas on the tail fins.
Design and Assembly
Some parts from the F90 model are reused in this kit, resulting in extra frame parts and E-packs. The core fighter is a prominent feature, recreated to fit the core block system unique to the Cluster Gundam. However, the smaller size of the core fighter means that parts like the canopy frame will require paint for full color accuracy, though stickers are provided for the blue tailfin stripes.
The core fighter can dock with the core booster F90 III, forming a larger unit that attaches to the back of the main body, creating a powerful aesthetic with multiple thrusters. Its stand-ready design also allows for stable posing and docking, without the need for additional support.
Key Assembly Features
To complete the assembly, the core fighter’s nose must be folded, and its wings tilted back at a 90-degree angle before attaching to the main body. Once attached, the F90 IIIY Cluster Gundam takes form, a model based on the F90 III mobile suit with a "Young Star Type" designation. The model distinguishes itself from previous versions with the unique core block system and a modified armor design.
The kit combines some reused parts with new moldings, providing a fresh design. ABS joints add durability, eliminating the need for polycaps. Small yellow thrusters are crafted as separate parts, enhancing the model’s three-dimensional appeal. The kit’s proportions are also modernized, consistent with other F90 models.
Detailed Features and Color Separation
The kit includes detailed color separation, particularly for the yellow parts, but smaller panel lines and details, such as the sensor marks, rely on stickers. The kit maintains a sharp and realistic finish, with a design faithful to the MG series standards.
Head and Body Design
The head shape of the Cluster Gundam gives it a distinct look, featuring a slightly fuller helmet and clear twin-eye detailing. Some areas around the ducts may need additional paint, though the main camera and vulcans are pre-colored with clear parts.
The cockpit cover has a rounded design, distinguishing it from previous F90 models. With the core booster attached, the model has an imposing back silhouette. The F90 IIIY’s waist armor and side armor maintain compatibility with previous F90 models, with exposed hardpoints to add optional mission packs.
Articulation and Poseability
The waist features a swinging joint that allows for extensive motion, while the elbow and shoulder joints achieve good mobility without interference from armor parts. The kit also preserves the leg articulation, allowing for a wide range of dynamic poses.
Weapons and Equipment
The beam rifle and shield are functional, with the beam shield mounted on the forearm and using bright neon parts for added visual impact. The mega beam bazooka comes in a set of two with clear part sensors and detachable waist hardpoints for easy storage. The bazooka’s grip is movable, enabling various poses like shoulder-mounted or held close to the body.
Comparisons with Previous Models
Compared to the original MG F90, the Cluster Gundam has a stockier appearance due to the revamped armor design. The armor’s structure has been completely revised, giving it a modern, sleek silhouette.
Versatility with Mission Packs
The kit includes additional joints for compatibility with previous F90 mission packs, including the ability to attach arm and leg units. While certain mission packs like the E and A types are compatible, others, such as chest-mounted packs, may not fit due to the altered body design.
Summary
The MG F90 IIIY Cluster Gundam marks a bold addition to the MG F90 lineup, with its near-total overhaul of parts and new core block system. The added mega beam bazookas, compatibility with existing mission packs, and the unique Young Star Type core fighter make it a versatile and detailed model suitable for F90 enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
