P-Bandai Gunpla HG 1/144 MWS-19051G D Gundam First Review
The HGUC D Gundam First makes its debut as a completely new mold, bringing this unique mobile suit to life in model kit form. This exclusive Premium Bandai release is priced at 2,530 yen and comes in a monochrome box with a simple instruction manual that lacks any background information on the mobile suit.
Included Accessories
This kit comes packed with a diverse range of weapons and tools, including:
- Beam Shotgun
- Drill Gun
- Tori-Mochi Gun (Adhesive Gun)
- Magnet Anchor
- Rivet Gun
- Wired Bomb
- Shield
- Beam Sabers (×2)
- Various Wires
Additionally, the kit includes a spare joint for attaching the beam sabers to the waist, as seen in the bottom right of the accessory image.
The sticker sheet provides foil stickers for various sensor details, yellow accents on the drill gun, and other small details.
Design & Concept
The D Gundam First originates from the manga Double Fake: Under the Gundam, where it is piloted by Darry Neal Guns as a work-suit (MS designed for labor tasks) rather than a traditional combat unit. True to its "First" designation, this model represents the unmodified version of the mobile suit before upgrades.
Its partially exposed frame, with visible cylinders in the gaps, gives it a rugged and mechanical aesthetic. The head design is unique, and most of its weapons resemble heavy-duty industrial tools, reinforcing its work-suit origins.
Build & Engineering
This fully new mold follows modern Gunpla engineering trends:
- No polycaps or ABS plastic—all joints utilize KPS plastic for improved durability and articulation.
- Partially recreated internal frame—visible through the armor gaps, effectively capturing the mechanical look of the suit.
The color separation is well-executed, with molded plastic covering most details. Notably:
- The small yellow parts on the shoulders are separate pieces.
- The frame sections feature strong color contrast.
- Small thrusters and inner verniers require painting.
Head Unit
Features a high crest and distinctive visor shape. Seam lines are disguised as panel details. The twin-eye section lacks clear parts, but the molded details are sharp. The cheek ducts require painting to match the official color scheme.
Torso & Backpack
The exposed frame in the abdomen adds to the rugged, industrial look. The chest vents and yellow circular detail are color-separated and well-defined.
Side and rear armor panels feature attachment joints for various equipment. The chest armor is uniquely designed, leaving a gap in the center. The backpack features separate vernier parts, allowing for rotation.
Backpack Connector:
- Designed with multiple ports, making it compatible with various expansion packs.
Arms & Shoulder Armor
The shoulder armor has molded panel lines to hide seam lines. The left forearm features a 3mm hole for shield attachment. The forearm design highlights a large exposed cylinder, enhancing the industrial aesthetic. The Knuckle Crusher (a built-in weapon) can be deployed without part-swapping.
Legs & Articulation
Exposed frame sections make the mechanical details pop. The legs have a signature "bent" frame, reinforcing its unique look. Most seam lines are hidden using molded panel details.
Ankle joints feature piston-like details. Feet include slight hollow areas, but the toes are articulated.
Poseability
Shoulder movement is slightly limited by the armor. Torso and neck have excellent articulation, allowing for extreme upward tilting. Hips and knees are highly flexible, with knee armor seamlessly fitting into the design when bent.
Weapons & Equipment
Beam Shotgun
Featured in concept art, but not used in the manga. Molded as a two-piece structure ("monaka" style) with a separate muzzle piece. Lacks pump-action mechanics, but the left hand includes an open palm for two-handed poses.
Tori-Mochi Gun (Adhesive Gun)
Small, compact tool-like weapon. Basic two-piece construction, but seam lines are minimized through recessed paneling.
Drill Gun
A large industrial tool with a cable connection to the backpack, resembling real-life air tools. The drill tip is removable, allowing for a wired firing effect. The wire is sturdy enough to hold poses without sagging.
Magnet Anchor
Another cable-connected tool for versatile action poses. Comes with a lead wire to simulate the firing effect. However, only one wire is included, limiting dual-firing poses unless additional wires are sourced.
Rivet Gun
Fires rivets for repair purposes. Also connects to the backpack via a cable. Ultra-small nozzle is a separate part for added detail.
Wired Bomb
Handheld explosive device. Yellow sections are recreated using stickers. Can be posed in a throwing position using the lead wire.
Shield
Features L-shaped joints for forearm mounting. Ball-jointed base, but only a single mounting point, reducing positional flexibility. Inner surface requires painting for accuracy. Bright yellow exterior gives it a distinct visual appeal.
Knuckle Crusher
Built into the forearm for close combat attacks. Uncomplicated yet rugged design that fits the mobile suit’s aesthetic.
Beam Sabers
Standard length beam effects included. The hilt has an expanded grip section, ensuring a secure fit in the hand.
Size Comparison
When compared to HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam and HGUC Jegan, the D Gundam First is slightly larger, reflecting its ZZ to Char’s Counterattack era proportions.
Summary
The D Gundam First arrives as a surprise kit release from Double Fake: Under the Gundam. Holding the kit in hand, its exposed frame sections, abdominal and leg structures, and unique industrial tool-based weapons make it an extremely distinctive design.
Pros:
- Completely new mold with modern engineering
- Excellent color separation with minimal sticker reliance
- Highly unique design with a rugged, mechanical aesthetic
- Diverse weapon loadout, offering plenty of play value
Cons:
- Some thruster and inner frame details require painting
- Limited shield articulation due to single mounting point
- Only one wire included, limiting dual wired-weapon displays
Overall, this is a fun and refreshing Gunpla kit that stands out in any collection, offering a unique take on the Gundam universe with its work-suit origins and unconventional weaponry. Highly recommended for builders looking for something different!
