P-Bandai MG 1/100 ZGMF-X12D Gundam Astray Out Frame D Review
ZGMF-X12D Gundam Astray Out Frame D was made into a kit for MG following the Testament Gundam. This is an order item from Premium Bandai, and the price is 6,380 yen. The package is monochromatic, but the instructions are partly in color.
There is no description of the machine itself. Accessories include a beam rifle, gun camera, 2 beam sign effects, multi-pack joint, gun handle, open hand, handle, stand joint, and screwless action base.
Stickers include foil stickers and water transfer decals that complement the color coding of the sensors and backpack. Since it is based on the Testament Gundam, there are some surplus parts, but they cannot be assembled as a Testament Gundam.
Gundam Astray Out Frame D, which was repaired by assembling the damaged Out Frame with spare parts of the Testament Gundam, has been made into a kit with MG. The kit is a redeco kit of the previously released Testament Gundam, and many parts are diverted, but its coloring is a refreshing white and blue, and the sub arm is stored in the back joint.
Since the base is the MG Testament Gundam, the proportions and balance are the same. Joints are a combination of poly cap and KPS, ABS is not used. The back joint is not as big and has a clean silhouette compared to the Divine Striker.
The color coding of the fuselage is mostly reproduced with the molding color, but the white part of the backpack is reproduced with a foil sticker. Some parts, such as the backpack, have a metallic molding color.
Comparing MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D vs MG Testament Gundam
This is comparing MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D with the MG Testament Gundam as the base kit.
Head Unit
The head shape of the MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D is different from the MG Testament Gundam. The Testament inherits the Astray silhouette, while the Out Frame D has a normal Gundam-like helmet. Both antennas have distinctive designs, but they are shorter compared to the Testament. The ducts and slits on the head are open for a precise finish. Additionally, the head cameras are clear parts.
Body Unit
The molding color of the MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D is a thin clear white. Although it is a torso, the shape of the chest and some waist armor has changed. The back is commonly equipped with a striker pack. The chest hatch can be opened and closed. The side armor has been redesigned with a rounded top. A beam sign grip is attached to the waist.
The back joint has a metallic black molding color, and the white line is complemented with a sticker. The inside and back of the thruster are well modeled, and the density is sufficient. Additionally, two armor Schneiders are included and can be removed.
This unit can be opened, revealing the unfolded sub-arm. The forearm part of the sub-arm can be extended.
There are multiple movable points, and the claw part can be rotated with a ball joint. Furthermore, the claw can be opened and closed. The seams of the back joint are detailed and molded. The waist armor features lining parts, and the hip joint axis is also swingable.
Arms Unit
The arms of the MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D are the same as those of the Testament Gundam. The wrist is also a type that can change expressions, including the thumb.
Legs Unit
The legs of the MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D are the same as those of the Testament Gundam, except for the ankles. The knee armor is linked and bends when the knee is moved. The fins on the duct part are also precisely reproduced.
The ankles are slightly larger and have a stable shape. The sole of the foot is flat without any protrusions. While the range of movement is similar to the Testament Gundam, the overall mobility of the main body is surprisingly smooth. When placed side by side with the flashy Testament Gundam, it may appear a bit plain, but the details and other features are finished with the characteristic density of the MG SEED series.
Side by side with the base kit MG Testament, the Gundam Astray Out Frame D complements its simplicity with a refreshing look, and the overall mobility is smooth without any notable limitations. The level of detail and density in its design is on par with other models in the MG SEED series.
Weaponry and Accessories set
This time, the MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D includes a beam rifle and a gun camera. Additionally, an action base is included, allowing for easy display and decoration. The stand joint is the type that attaches to the hip joint as usual.
The beam rifle is reproduced with a newly designed look. The stock can be expanded and contracted, but there are visible seams due to the left and right split design.
The gun handle and holding dowel are included, but they cannot be firmly fixed and the attachment is shallow. However, since it is not a large weapon, it is not difficult to hold.
The gun camera features complex design with clear parts used for the lens. There is a seam due to the stepped mold.
Both weapons can be attached to the sub-arm. The sub-arm itself has a strong grip and can support the weapons without any issues. It offers a high degree of freedom, allowing for movement and posing.
The back-mounted Armor Schneider can be removed and deployed. The grip part has a seam due to the three-part configuration. The design resembles a climbing ice ax, which adds an interesting touch.
The beam sign can be detached from the waist and held as it is. There is a holding dowel that ensures it doesn't slip off. The blade itself is similar to a regular saber.
You can also play with the back joint, but it would be great to have an option to make it three-dimensional as a separate piece. The MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D includes a multi-pack joint, allowing for compatibility with various packs. It is typically used for striker packs. When replacing the pack, remove it if it interferes with the collarbone armor or the fins on the back. When equipped with a decoy, ensure a proper fit.
Schwert Gebert can be securely held without any problems. However, the stand joint of the hip joint may be prone to coming off when put on and taken off multiple times. When replacing it with the silhouette system, attach the provided joint by placing it on your back. Note that the position will be quite far back to attach and connect the joint. Additionally, there may be some noticeable gaps. The pack itself can be equipped without any problems, but similar to this one, some items may not fit the wrist grip properly, and certain weapons may not align as desired.
Summary
The MG Gundam Astray Out Frame D incorporates several parts from the Testament Gundam kit. However, there are notable design changes in prominent areas such as the head and chest. The backpack is a back joint with an attached sub arm. It features unique equipment such as a sub arm, a gun camera, and an Armor Schneider that resembles an ice ax.
Furthermore, the Gundam Astray Out Frame D can be equipped with not only the Striker pack but also the Wizard and Silhouette packs. This provides the opportunity for various replacements and customization options, especially if you have a collection of MG SEED kits.
