P-Bandai Gunpla MG 1/100 Gundam Base limited RGZ-91 Re-GZ [ Char's Counterattack Ver. ] Review
The MG RE-GZ (Char's Counterattack Ver.), an updated version of the 2001 MG RE-GZ, incorporates new parts and improvements. Released through Gundam Side F and later available via Premium Bandai, the kit is priced at 6,600 yen.
What's Included in the Kit
The kit includes a variety of accessories:
- Beam Rifle
- Shield
- Two Beam Sabers
- Right Gun-holding Hand
- Gripping Hand Parts
- Open Hand Parts
- Pilot Figure
- Two Types of Stand Joins
- BWS (Back Weapon System) Parts for Combination
Additionally, the kit includes decals such as foil stickers for the cameras and water transfer decals.
Overabundance of Spare Parts
There are many extra parts, as both the old MG RE-GZ parts and parts from the MG RE-GZ Custom kit (which served as a base for the update) are included. This makes cutting out and assembling a bit more challenging. The box size is also quite large.
Kit Overview
The MG RE-GZ (Char's Counterattack Ver.) is a redesigned version of the MS seen in the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, piloted by Amuro in the beginning and later used by Chain in the later stages of the film. This updated version combines parts from the original MG RE-GZ, parts from the MG RE-GZ Custom, and updates from the MG RE-GZ Unicorn Ver., which was released earlier.
Compared to the 2001 version, the head has been notably downsized, and the structure has been redesigned to reduce visible seams. Other parts, such as the chest and thigh areas, have been adjusted with new articulation to bring it closer to the standards of more modern kits.
Frame Material Update
The frame material has been updated from ABS (used in earlier kits) to the more modern KPS (Korea Plastic System) material. However, some parts of the leg still use screws, meaning a small screwdriver is required for assembly. The BWS (Back Weapon System) is included and can dock onto the main body, enabling transformation into the MA (Mobile Armor) form.
Enhanced Color Separation
With the introduction of new parts, the color separation has improved, although certain areas (like internal thrusters, grenade launcher heads, and ducts) will require painting for a more complete look.
Detailed Look at the Kit
Head Unit
The head has been notably downsized compared to the old MG version, with improvements in detailing, such as painted cameras and vulcan guns, along with sharper overall sculpting. The helmet also features an invisible seam line due to the updated design.
- Twin Eyes: Clear parts are used for the eyes, maintaining the sleek look.
Torso and Backpack
The torso features new parts, especially around the chest area, which now presents a firmer, more angular design. The backpack retains its original design but includes movable tail stabilizers and thrusters, with separate parts for the thruster interiors. Some parts, like the front armor's ducts, still need painting.
- Cockpit: The cockpit hatch remains operable.
- Details: Even the underside of the tail stabilizer is finely detailed.
Shoulder and Arm Details
The shoulder details have remained relatively unchanged, but the forearms now use newly designed parts to reduce visible seams. The arms' thrusters require painting, and the grenade launcher on the arm is movable, with the grenade head requiring red paint.
- Hand Parts: The hands are upgraded to MP runners, allowing easier posing by replacing the non-thumb fingers. However, the upper arms still show visible seam lines.
Thighs and Legs
The thighs feature an updated design, with the addition of a roll joint to improve articulation. The thrusters on the legs are now separate parts, providing better detail. The feet are designed without any hollowing.
Hip and Knee Joints: The hip joints are locked in place, though they can be unlocked for additional posing. The knee joints remain highly articulated.
BWS (Back Weapon System) and MA Mode
The BWS attaches to the kit, with the transformation into MA mode being relatively simple. The process involves repositioning parts like the shoulder armor, adjusting the waist, and attaching the necessary weapons and parts for the MA form.
MA Mode Features: The MA form includes large beam cannons on the wings and a mega-beam cannon at the front. The transformation process is simple but effective, creating an imposing look.
Comparison to Previous Models
The new Char's Counterattack Ver. offers notable improvements over the original MG RE-GZ, such as a more proportionate head, improved articulation, and more advanced color separation. The plastic color has shifted from a bluish hue to a greener tone, providing a more sophisticated look.
Comparison with MG Unicorn Version: The primary difference between the two versions is the color; the Char's Counterattack Ver. uses a brighter and more striking color scheme.
Weapons and Accessories
Beam Rifle
The Beam Rifle is simple yet effective, with a new peg for the gun-holding hand and improved detail with recessed seams. The design ensures a secure grip, though the rifle’s long design can interfere with arm movement at times.
Shield
The shield features updated details, including new grenade parts and a more refined design. The shield can be attached securely to the forearm, but it’s unable to be held by the hand alone.
Beam Sabers
The Beam Sabers are equipped with specialized grips and can be posed more easily, thanks to the updated shoulder articulation.
Action Base and Stand Joins
The inclusion of a stand joint and action base makes displaying the model in various poses much easier, especially for older MG models that lacked such features.
Summary
The MG RE-GZ (Char's Counterattack Ver.) is a significant update to the older MG RE-GZ, providing better articulation, new parts, and more detailed sculpting. It successfully blends the old and the new, creating a kit with improved proportions and features. Although some parts still retain a slightly dated look, this model represents a great step forward for the RE-GZ, making it easier to pose and display.
For Gunpla enthusiasts, this updated version is a welcome addition to the collection, with its enhanced aesthetics and improved poseability. It’s a perfect example of how older kits can benefit from thoughtful updates.
