This is review of Bandai plastic model kit Gunpla FM 1/100 GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series.
Bandai Gunpla FM 1/100 GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam Review
Calamity and Raider were initially released, but the remaining Forbidden was also introduced as a kit with full mechanics. The price is 6,380 yen. The accessories only consist of the heavy neck sickle, which requires the heg, handle parts, and stand joint.
The included stickers comprise foil stickers and marking stickers meant to complement the sensors. Some surplus parts are included due to the utilization of certain Calamity frame runners. The Forbidden Gundam shares the same SEED full mechanics frame as Calamity & Raider.
Similar to the other 2nd GAT-X series models, this iteration features a robust build with intricate surface armor composition, resulting in a high level of detail. Notably, the backpack on the rear and the Geschmeidig Panzer on the back are sculpted quite extensively, creating a more imposing silhouette. However, due to the weight on the back, there's a tendency for the kit to lean backward. While it can stand on its own, for prolonged display, it might be advisable to provide support using a stand or similar device.
The assembly process for the kit remains consistent with previous iterations, with all joints employing KPS technology and no poly caps used. Additionally, details not captured in the HG model are faithfully reproduced, including the cable of the Geschmeidig Panzer. The separation of parts is finely executed, and the aircraft's color scheme is effectively replicated using molded colors.
The original design of the mobile suit exhibited a well-balanced and three-dimensional appearance, with a sense of strength in its proportions. Furthermore, the joint arm supporting the substantial backpack is sturdy and adds stability to this area.
Head Unit
The head's division is also finely executed, lacking any visible seams. The cheek ducts and Egelstern are accurately reproduced as separate components, and the cheek slits have been meticulously crafted to be open. Furthermore, clear parts like the twin eyes are appropriately color-coded, eliminating the need for stickers.
Body Unit
The main body exhibits a harmonious arrangement, with distinct portions of armor being partially exposed and lending a three-dimensional quality to the design. The chest's duct fins have also transitioned into a more intricate configuration.
It's important to note that the back joint has been uniquely designed and is not compatible in the same manner as the Calamity model.
Arms Unit
The shoulder armor joints showcase intricate detailing, contributing to the overall increase in mold complexity. The arms also possess a multifaceted surface design. The wrists are of a type where solely the thumb is articulated and the remaining fingers can be interchanged. However, only a handle and grip are included; there are no open hand parts provided.
The forearm's non-foyer area is also accurately recreated using separate components. Additionally, a movable axis has been incorporated at the wrist's base, enhancing the ability to hold the "Nidhoggr" Heavy Scythe weapon more effectively.
Legs Unit
The waist armor is all movable and has backing parts. The details of the backing parts are quite fine. There is also a swing gimmick for the hip joint as well as others.
The legs have an orthodox shape, but a part of the armor is opened and fin-like details are included in the duct parts. In addition, it is a structure that does not come out at seams.
The cover of the calf thruster can be opened and closed. There is also a mold on the back side. The toe of the ankle is movable. There was a slight flesh cut on the tip of the toe.
Movability and Articulation
The backpack is reminiscent of a large shell, boasting a densely packed arrangement that, while not immediately evident, houses an intricate inner frame worth appreciating. Notably, clear parts are utilized for elements like the sizeable antenna on the head. The ducts in the vicinity are thoughtfully open and color-coded, including the well-replicated muzzle of the guided plasma cannon "Hresvelgr."
Despite being nearly imperceptible, a mono-eye detail is incorporated into the frame within the clear parts. The backpack incorporates a movable Binder Joint (BJ) and finely detailed internal components. The arm connecting the Geschmeidig Panzer can be expanded and rotated at its base, revealing a design complexity that transcends mere simplicity.
The Geschmeidig Panzer is meticulously color-coded, extending even to the minute ▼ component. The cable is faithfully represented using a mesh pipe. While lining parts are present, the claw-shaped segment features a slight indentation. Furthermore, the backside of this component allows for the mounting of the "Nidhoggr" Heavy Scythe with the blade in a folded position.
Regarding mobility, the shoulders exhibit an extensive range of motion, notably when the shoulder axis is extended. A full 360-degree rotation is attainable, facilitating movement in all directions. Consequently, there is a high degree of flexibility around the shoulders, enabling unhindered swinging. The abdomen can be extended, and the waist segment beneath it is maneuverable, providing a commendable range for both front and back swaying. Naturally, hip rotation is also possible.
The legs demonstrate a moderate grounding, but the hip joints offer impressive mobility, allowing for a substantial bending of the knees without encountering significant interference.
Weaponry and Accessories set
The primary handheld weapon is the "Nidhoggr" Heavy Scythe, a substantial neck sickle. The stand joint employs a slide lock mechanism compatible with action bases. However, while it does feature a slide lock, the main body's weight is quite significant. Excessive tilting could potentially disengage the lock, so it's advised to exercise caution.
If detachment becomes a frequent issue, it might develop into a recurring problem. Consequently, I had to be cautious about the angle of inclination to avoid it becoming dislodged. The "Nidhoggr" Heavy Scythe boasts a foldable blade. It maintains color coding and incorporates molded seams with incremental steps. When held on the wrist, it offers a secure grip without rotational movement due to a protrusion.
While the blade consists of a singular part, the gloss is strategically differentiated. This detail is particularly impressive, showcasing a sizable blade reminiscent of its depiction in the anime. Often, these types of scythes tend to rotate when mounted on standard round shafts without stabilizing pegs.
Moreover, it was easy to wield with both hands due to the forearm's articulation. The 115mm cannon "Armfeuer" generally maintains a secure grip and can be adequately supported by the typical main body. However, due to the backpack's substantial weight, the waist occasionally experiences bending due to the load. While there may be some variability in this aspect, if such concerns arise, adjustments might be necessary.
For the transformation into the high-speed assault form, start by extending the Geschmeidig Panzer and raising the Ekzahn. Subsequently, rotate the backpack along with the chest block. During this process, the head is drawn in. Finally, adjust the Geschmeidig Panzer's position to complete the high-speed assault mode. This configuration results in an unusual silhouette with the backpack worn from above.
Although there's no specific locking mechanism, all the backpack's arms are solid, preventing any issues with sagging. The energy-deflecting armor "Geschmeidig Panzer" provides a high degree of articulation, allowing for secure holding in the forward position. The cable, constructed from a mesh pipe, doesn't hinder movement. Additionally, as the cable is threaded through and then fastened, it remains secure and isn't prone to detachment.
The 88mm railgun "Ekzahn" can be deployed without requiring the magnetic field generator on the rail to be replaced. The induced plasma cannon "Hresvelgr" at the center of the Ekzahn is well-executed in terms of color coding and visual appeal. Furthermore, since the base of the Ekzahn features a Binder Joint (BJ), it can be slightly opened. The various weapons are meticulously crafted on a larger scale, achieving a visual balance similar to that seen in the anime, and they exude a powerful aura.
Comparison with FM Calamity Gundam and FM Raider Gundam
With both models sharing the same brand and format, a seamless sense of unity is achieved. A comparison with the HG version of the Forbidden reveals distinct differences in image size. Notably, the enlarged backpack and Geschmeidig Panzer draw attention, yet the main body also boasts a more elegantly balanced design.
Summary
Following the releases of Calamity and Raider, the trilogy is now complete with three full mechanics kits. While lacking an intricate frame due to the full mechanics approach, the arrangement and detail density in various areas rival the quality of the Gundam SEED Master Grade (MG) kits. Notably, the weaponry that appeared smaller in the HG version has been magnified, resulting in a striking and stylish outcome.
This does contribute to the backpack's considerable weight, requiring some caution when utilizing a stand. However, the intricate details, including the Ekzaan deployment gimmick, are meticulously reproduced, ensuring both the regular and assault forms have a compelling appearance. Overall, it's an aesthetically pleasing and impressive kit.
