Bandai action figure Gunpla GUNDAM UNIVERSE MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame Review
The Astray Red Frame is making its first appearance in the Gundam Universe series, and the entire sculpt is brand new. There are some minor simplifications, like the solid red color on the upper arms and all-white wrists, but there are no major deviations from the original design. Overall, it stays faithful to the source material.
Head Sculpt
As is typical of the Gundam Universe series, the head sculpt is sharp and dynamic, with a fierce, aggressive look. The metallic paint on the eyes is consistent with other Gundam Universe figures, and the antenna is sharp and pointed, staying true to the original Astray Red Frame design.
Body Details
There are some changes, such as the lack of exposed frame parts on the sides of the chest and abdomen, but overall, the sculpt and coloring are mostly faithful to the original. The bulkier proportions typical of the Gundam Universe series are present, particularly in the arms and legs.
Arm and Leg Sculpt
The limbs are slightly thicker, consistent with the Gundam Universe style. While the original design features more color detailing on the upper arms and wrists, the Red Frame here uses simpler color schemes, with all-red arms and all-white wrists.
Backpack and Sword Sheath
Unlike some other Astray figures, this version doesn’t have a backpack mechanism that shifts downward. The handles of the beam sabers are also fixed in place and cannot be removed. The sword sheath is attached to the side armor, not to the side of the thighs as seen in other models. Additionally, the sword handle cannot be detached from the sheath, so when posing the figure with the sword drawn, the entire sheath needs to be removed.
Accessories
Gerbera Straight Sword: Although there’s no additional paint detailing on the blade, the sword's edge has been sculpted to include some patterning. The handle is partially painted, giving it a decent appearance despite the simplicity.
Comparison with Other Figures
When placed alongside the Metal Build version of the Red Frame, the Gundam Universe version maintains the same size as other figures in the series, offering good consistency.
Articulation and Poseability
The joints are standard for the Gundam Universe series, so the range of motion is about what you would expect. While there isn’t a pull-out shoulder joint for improved movement, it’s still possible to achieve a two-handed sword pose, though just barely. The short front skirt armor allows for better leg articulation, making it easier to lift the legs into dynamic stances. While the neck has good range of motion, the waist rotation is minimal, similar to other figures in the series. However, the figure has decent ground stability, allowing for solid poses, including kneeling.
Additional Features
The figure comes with the standard Gundam Universe stand joint, but it lacks open-palm hands, which is a bit disappointing for those looking for more expressive posing options.
Summary
The Gundam Astray Red Frame stays largely true to its original design, with only a few minor color omissions like the white on the upper arms and wrists. Despite the slightly bulkier proportions typical of the Gundam Universe line, it retains a stylish, powerful appearance. The articulation is similar to other figures in the series, with no major surprises, but also no groundbreaking flexibility. The figure’s limited accessories, featuring only the Gerbera Straight sword, and the lack of multiple hand options, reflect the affordable price point.
The Astray Red Frame has been widely available in premium lines like Metal Build, but there are surprisingly few easy-to-play-with finished figures like this one. For those looking for a simple, well-made figure of the Red Frame, this is a solid option, especially at its price point.
